A Summary of Dr. Peikoff’s Argument for Voting for Republicans

  1. Dr. Leonard Peikoff recently shocked — SHOCKED — the nation by again breaking his silence on issues of practical politics in his podcast.

He wrote out an explanation for his recommendation here.

This is notable because he previously recommended that we all vote Democratic on the grounds that the Republicans with their theocratic aspirations represent a greater threat to America than the Democrats’ insane creeping/meandering socialism.  In light of all the “accomplishments” made by the Obama Administration which has lead to Peikoff’s reversal, I am sure that someone somewhere is already bitching about what a shocking — SHOCKING — reversal and saying, “I told you so.”

But in case you don’t understand or care to read through it, I am here to provide a summary of the argument.  But first, some groundwork:

  1. Republicans are the biggest threat to American freedom because the underlying ideology behind their actions today is religion, which will drive them inexorably to turn America into a theocracy unless they change their minds and change their ways.
  2. Democrats are pretty rotten — they are politicians after all — but they aren’t really socialists. They lack a unifying ideology or system of values but are pretty thoroughly pragmatic in their approach, so they’re dangerous only insofar as their mixed values will cause them to bleed the country dry, which is actually what the Republicans want as well.

So, with those two reasons, Peikoff said we should vote Democrat, thinking that by putting the Democrats in power, the Republicans wouldn’t be able to succeed in their mission to make this a Christian nation.

Unfortunately, when you boil it down to concretes because the Republicans and the Democrats so frequently want the exact same things the Republicans have been able to succeed in turning the 2008 Democratic victory into a subversive Judo Flip using the Democrats to accomplish lots of things that they couldn’t have accomplished while trying to legislate from the pulpit.

Basically, the Democrats have been FAR more successful than the Republicans in getting a lot of stupid, destructive shit done. And Peikoff says he didn’t anticipate that.

So, even though the Republicans are the greater threat, their ineptitude at getting things done is our saving grace and we need to put them back into power.

Frank J puts it another, more humorous way on PJ Media.

During the second term of the Bush presidency people just got fed up with Republicans. They were idiots, they were no good at the whole fiscal conservatism thing (which is sort of the whole point of them), we had these wars that seemed to be going nowhere, and the economy was beginning to fail. They sucked, and people were sick and tired of them.

Thus people turned to the Democrats. And Obama.

Let’s just say they also sucked.

AMERICANS: “So, the economy is pretty bad and there’s high employment. You think you can do something about that?”

DEMOCRATS AND OBAMA: “We can spend a trillion dollars we don’t have on pork and stuff.”

AMERICANS: “No … that’s not what we want. We’d really like you not to do that.”

DEMOCRATS: “You’re stupid. We’re doing it anyway.”

AMERICANS: “That’s not going to help us get jobs!”

DEMOCRATS: “Sure it will; millions of them … though they may be invisible. You’ll have to trust us they exist. And guess what else we’ll do: We’ll create a giant new government program to take over health care.”

AMERICANS: “That has nothing to do with jobs!”

DEMOCRATS: “We don’t care about that anymore. We really want a giant new health care program. We’re sure you’ll love it.”

AMERICANS: “Don’t pass that bill. You hear me? Absolutely do not pass that bill.”

DEMOCRATS: “Believe me; you’ll love it. It has … well, I don’t know what exactly is in the bill, but we’re sure it’s great.”

DEMOCRATS: “You’re not the boss of me! We’re doing it anyway!”

AMERICANS: “Look what you did! Now the economy is way worse, we’re even deeper in debt, and we have a bunch of new laws we don’t want!”

DEMOCRATS: “You’re racist.”

AMERICANS: “Wha … How is that racist?”

DEMOCRATS: “Now you’re getting violent! Stop being violent and racist, you ignorant hillbillies! And remember to vote Democrat in November.”

You should read that whole article because it features puppies and zombies.

Doesn’t Peikoff’s post prove his original idea wrong? It seemed a lot more obvious to me 8 years ago that Democrats were poised to do a lot more damage than any kind of progress towards theocracy that Republicans could make. And low and behold that’s exactly what’s happened. Add to that that Democrats are becoming just as religious to appease the masses, and you have a real recipe for disaster.

Well, the original idea was that the biggest threat is theocracy, religion. With the Democrats becoming more religious, that supports his point. Where he was wrong was the amount of damage he thought the Democrats would be able to do. And he admits that.
